Reconstruction: The new plan that President Lincoln had for the country. This plan was meant for getting the country back together like is was before the South seceded from the Union. The plan was also meant for the country to get better in the sense of unity and being together once more.
In 1860, one of the most important events happen. It was the election of our 16th president Abraham Lincoln. Because most of the population was in the North and they supported Lincoln, he won by outnumbering the South with votes. He believed that the government should be strong and controlling, he did not support slavery, and he was an abolitionist.

As a result of Lincolns election, South Carolina seceded from the Union in protest because they did not like Lincoln's ideas and laws that would be put into place once he started his term. Also, southern politicians and people lost hope in the union.

In 1869, the 15th Amendment was put into place. Congressional Republicans wanted to protect their Reconstruction plan. They were worried that the southern states might try to keep black voters from the poles in future elections. On the other hand, Radical Republicans argued that it wasn't fair that the northern states still had laws preventing the blacks to vote.

After the 15th Amendment was underway, it gave free black men the right to vote. This would create a huge difference with who won upcoming elections. Even though blacks were now allowed to vote, women became angry at the fact that the amendment did not also grant them the right to vote.

In 1877, there was a compromise that had to take place. This event was called the Compromise of 1877. This event was caused by the Republican party loosing control over the House of Representatives. Also, the Republican party began to abandon the reconstruction Plan.

The Compromise of 1877 finally let Democrat and Republican parties come together and agree.

After the Compromise of 1877, Democrats agreed to accept Hay's victory. In return, they wanted all remaining federal troops from the South. After that, Hays did move the troops from the south. Democrats also asked for funding for internal improvements of a southern Democrat to the presidents cabinet.
