States' Rights
Another cause of the Civil War is that the states were fighting about what rights they got. Some states wanted more rights than others, and other states thought that wasn't fair. The South wanted much more than they already had. That included the many right that they wanted such as nullification rights and secession rights. They also wanted the government to give them popular sovereignty. The North was happy with the rights that they had given to them from the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. They felt that the South shouldn't get to have all of the extra rights after they all agreed on the present rights of the states.
The Missouri Compromise was a document that was made to make both the North and South happy in the way that they would both, in a sense, feel even in power. Missouri applied to be a slave state in 1819. They were actually named a state in 1820. The North wanted a new state also, so they got Maine as a state in 1821. Both the North and South were worried about loosing power. To make up for their worries, they came up with the document known as the Missouri Compromise. This entitled Missouri to be a slave state and Maine to be a free state. This document also made it so any state north of the 36' 30'' line was free and any state south of the line was slave.
Even after the states agreed on the Missouri Compromise, they still were not agreeing on everything. The states were beginning to separate due to a power struggle between them. The North and South were also starting to grow an enormous hatred between each other.
